Have You Started Seeing Your Parents Differently? | The Quiet Realization That They Are Getting Older Too
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
There is a moment that sneaks up on you. You are watching your parent do something they have always done and something looks different. A little slower. A little more effort than it used to take. And it stops you. In this episode we talk about that quiet and often emotional realization that the people who always felt permanent in your life are getting older too. How adulthood shifts the way you see them, not just as your parents but as people with their own humanity, their own limits, and their own relationship with time. This is a conversation about what it means to hold that awareness with love, presence, and a new kind of appreciation for the time you have.
🎧 If you have ever caught yourself seeing your parents through a completely different lens, this one will meet you right where you are. Come listen.
Hey friends, welcome to another episode of Becoming with Kethney. Now, on this episode,
Welcome And Today’s Theme
SpeakerI would like to talk about the concept of time and aging. You see, I was reflecting recently, and I was reflecting on the fact that I see
Childhood View Of Aging
Speakertime and age differently now that I'm older and now that I'm deeper in my adulthood. You see, as a child, I always used to notice age in relation to me. Meaning I'm a year older. But now I feel like I'm not only noticing that I'm older, but also the loved ones around me. And that's something that I never used to notice before. You see, it's not just that I'm noticing that I'm getting older, but also the ones that I love are getting older too. Like my parents and the elders in my life. You see, I don't know about you, but for me, when I was younger, I never really thought about aging in relation to the elders in my life. For whatever reason, in my mind, they always felt permanent. They always looked the same. The concept of time in relation to them was static. And I
Noticing Elders Change In Adulthood
Speakerthink, you know, nothing's really changed. I think for me, my perspective and my self-awareness has evolved from something that was more subconscious because I do feel like on a subconscious level, as a child, I knew that the elders in my life were growing older. But that wasn't something that I consciously thought of or consciously made myself aware of. But now that I'm a little bit older, I'm realizing the things that I didn't notice before. You see, my perspective has shifted. You know, you notice the gray hairs, the wrinkles, the medical appointments, things that you overlooked when you were younger. And now that you're getting older, you see your loved ones, your elders in your life getting older too. And you see, that's made me appreciate the time that I have with them a lot more. You
Choosing More Intentional Time Together
Speakersee, I want to call more often. I want to listen to their stories. I want to make sure that the time that I'm spending with them is intentional, that I'm present in the moment. Because on a conscious level, I'm realizing that we're all aging and those moments are very valuable. And it's just crazy to me because with adulthood, I feel like for me came this realization that the people that raised me are also getting older. Like my grandparents, they were always old in my eyes when I was younger. And now that I'm also an adult, I'm just more aware that oh wow, my grandparents are even older than they were back then. My parents, same thing. They were always older in relation to me. But now that I have a better understanding of life, of aging, of time, realizing all those connections that I have with those elders, how much I want to continue nurturing them and valuing them. And I just I feel like with this episode, it's really a discussion of just awareness,
A Reflection For Your Week
Speakera different perspective, a shift, in fact, of aging, where I feel like society it mainly talks about aging in relation to you, your aging, you're getting one year older, or whatever it is. But the perspective shifts, the reflection that I want to talk about is noticing aging with others as well, and putting that more on the conscious level rather than subconsciously. So here's your reflection for this week. What's something that you appreciate from the elders in your life now that you didn't necessarily consciously think about when you were younger? And have you had a moment where you realize that the elders in your life are aging too? And it's not just you. You see, growing older isn't just about watching yourself change, but it's also about watching those around you change too. Very interesting and something that I just wanted to discuss, reflect on, and see if anyone else wanted to reflect on it too. If you like this episode, remember to like and subscribe.
